PHILLIES ALL STAR PITCHER TO HONOR TEAM’S OLDEST FAN

Phillies Pitcher Cliff Lee will be the featured speaker at a luncheon to benefit UrbanPromise at noon on Thursday, June 26 at BMW of Mount Laurel. While fielding questions from the attendees and local sports commentator Beasley Reece, about how the team is responding to Ryne Sandberg’s leadership and what pitcher he dreads to face as a batter, Lee will be on the lookout for a certain member of the audience—quite possibly the Phillies oldest and most loyal fan, Walter Schlitz, 100 years old, of Collingswood, New Jersey.

Other than when serving his country as a Sergeant during World War II, where for three years he was all over the Pacific and Southeast Asia, Schlitz has never missed listening to the Phillies on the radio or watching them on television since 1938; a devotion that has lasted more than 70 years and includes the Phillies 16 year losing streak that ran from 1933-1948 and their two World Series wins in 1980 and 2006.

Through all the teams’ ups and downs, Schlitz has remained an avid fan; quoting team statistics and remaining optimistic in the current season “I am a believer,” says Schlitz.

Cliff Lee will take a moment on Thursday to recognize Schlitz for his outstanding dedication to the team. But if you ask him the secret to his longevity, he might tell you, “If I had known I was going to live to 100, I would have taken better care of myself!”

Cliff Lee is a long –time supporter of UrbanPromise and its mission to serve the children and youth of Camden NJ through schools, camps and after school programs throughout the city.
