Interns are college-aged students interested in working with children and youth in the inner-city.  The UrbanPromise Intern Program provides urban youth ministry training, combining theological education with hands-on ministry experience.  By inviting people who are foreign to inner-city communities (interns come from across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Africa, and Korea), UP also seeks to bridge the chasm between ethnic and socioeconomic groups.  Interns make a commitment of 2 - 24 months and play a key role in the ministry.

We invite you to come join our team and work with experiences staff in caring for the kids of Camden. Be an intern for the summer or the academic year. During the summer, you will have a week of innovative and motivating training to prepare you for relational ministry in the inner city. You and your team will work together to lead summer camps; teaching classes, participating in crazy games and skits, and running small discipleship groups. You will also participate in daily devotions, weekly inner city ministry classes and Sunday fellowship, where you will be able to learn, reflect and share about your experiences. On the weekends, we will have optional trips to New York City, Washington D.C., Ocean City, MD and Atlantic City. This is an action packed summer experience where you will be stretched to learn and grow, and hopefully at the same time, have the best time of your life. Come be an UrbanPromise Intern, experience the joy in serving.

Be an intern for 10 months during the Academic year. The year offered everything the summer does but provides a more in depth experience of ministry in the city. Instead of summer camps, you will be working in our afterschool programs. There you will have the opportunity to be a vital part of the kids lives by building mentoring relationships. You will also volunteer at other ministries in Camden, getting a fuller picture of the city. Throughout the year you will be living in a Christian community where you will learn, grow, and go through your intern yearn together. If you open yourself up to this experience and allow God to use you, your life will never be the same.

Summer Internships

The summer internship program is a seven week program for university and college-age students.  The Summer Experience includes:

  • A Week of Training, Team-Building and Prep
  • The Joys and Challenges of Community Living
  •  Mentoring
  • Coaching Basketball and Softball Teams
  • Interesting Intern Classes exploring political, sociological and spiritual issues
  • Saturday Trips to Washington D.C., NYC, the Jersey Shore
  • Challenging Daily Devotions
  • Fun Sunday Night Fellowships

The summer program is an excellent, brief introduction to urban and youth ministry.  It is a great opportunity for college students interested in a cross-cultural service experience.

Academic Year Internships

Academic year interns spend their year working with a team of long-term staff, other interns and local teenagers.  Together, they run a neighborhood-based AfterSchool Program (ASP).  The Intern Experience includes:

  • Fun Evening ASP Activities
  • Leading your own ASP class
  • Interacting with Local Families
  • Volunteering in Local Schools
  • Interesting Classes and Projects
  •  A small monthly stipend
  • The Joys and Challenges of Community Living
  • Weekly Community Bible Study, Prayer and Worship

The ASPs expose interns to a broad range of ministry experiences and provide a practical base on which to build a greater understanding of urban issues.  With this experience, interns who are accepted for a second year can specialize in any one of Urban Promise’s ministry areas.

Second Year Interns

Some interns commit to serve for a second year.  Second year interns play a leadership role amongst first year interns as well as take a class on leadership development.  During this year, the intern will gain further experience and knowledge of working in urban ministry.  He or she will focus in a specific area of interest to gain skills and experience specific to that area.  Interested interns will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to create youth programs in other, under resourced communities.
