Director of Wellness

Jessica Shinn, LSW

Jessica is passionate about building connections with both youth and adults, with a particular focus on trauma care and the healing process.

Jessica believes deeply that we are created for community — that our sense of identity is shaped in relationship with others, and that healing happens best when we don’t have to walk the journey alone. At UrbanPromise, her desire is to help strengthen our community of support, encouragement, safety, and belonging as we grow into a more trauma-informed and trauma-healing organization.

Jessica joined UrbanPromise from the faraway land of the Midwest. She began as an MSW intern in fall 2022, quickly found her calling, and was hired as the high school counselor in May 2023. A few months later, she stepped into the role of Wellness Director while completing her Master of Social Work degree from Eastern University in Pennsylvania. She also holds a BA in Psychology from Carson Newman University (Tennessee), a post-baccalaureate teaching certification in 7th-12th grade Language Arts from Central State University (Ohio), and brings a rich background in family preservation work in child welfare, credit recovery teaching, YMCA youth development, and health coaching through New Balance Detroit.

In her free time, Jessica enjoys adventures with her husband, Jason, and their two dogs — Sallah and Short Round, both huskies/husky mixes.
