Director of Experiential Learning

Tom Kulp

Tom’s goal at UrbanPromise is to bring more opportunities for hands-on learning, providing the start of a vocational path that will enrich Urban’s already strong academic path.

As Director of Experiential Learning, Tom brings many years of experience and training, and a passion for the importance of recognizing different learning styles as part of quality education in the lives of young people.

Tom earned BSs in Civil and Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University, and an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School, and worked in industry and private practice for forty-five years.  For thirty of those years, Tom also volunteered with UrbanPromise, participating in the development of the Urban Trekker expeditionary learning program and the Urban BoatWorks wooden boat building shop.

Tom has worked with youth in a variety of capacities – as a high school Sunday Seminar teacher, co-leading thirteen short term youth mission trips to Appalachia with Appalachian Service Project, volunteering every year on multiple Urban Trekker outings, and tutoring students in Urban Promise Academy.  Through his years of experience with urban youth, he has become an advocate for social justice issues, youth development, and effective methods for bringing experiential learning to teens. Tom and his wife have three adopted children, and Tom enjoys spending quality time with his wife and children and working on old houses.
