“I signed a contract with the airborne infantry,” chuckled Byron Lightfoot. “I’ve never even been on an airplane. I’m going to be a paratrooper.”
That’s courage. That’s guts.
It’s also a perspective that sums up Byron’s view on life: “The army will help me face my fears. I want to do something hard. Being part of an elite force is appealing to me.”
In 2023, Byron graduated from UrbanPromise Academy. He began his college journey at Rutgers University, later transferring to Camden County College to study finance and business. Now, he’s ready for a bigger challenge.
So, he signed with the Army—not only because they’ll cover his future education, but also because of his deep respect for those who serve. “I’ve always respected those who serve our country. I think it’ll make me a better man.” Byron leaves for basic training in two weeks.
Byron credits UrbanPromise with broadening his horizons. “My time at UrbanPromise really exposed me to a bigger world. Through the Trekkers program I went fishing, hiking, and camping. I never knew I enjoyed those things until I was given the opportunity at UrbanPromise. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this place.”
For the past six months, Byron has interned with UrbanPromise’s Director of Finance, Maureen Gallicchio. He’s learned about payroll, taxes, and credit expenses. “He’s really made a contribution and I’m sorry to see him leave,” Maureen shared. “But I’m excited for his next step.”
When asked where he hopes to be in ten years, Byron’s answer is clear: “I really want to be a good family man. I especially want to help people with financial literacy. It’s something our community really needs.”
Another UrbanPromise graduate heads into the world—making a difference, serving others, serving his country. That gives me hope.
