“Why all the space heaters?” I asked on a recent visit to our AfterSchool program located in the Fairview section of Camden.
“Furnace is on the fritz,” lamented Albert, Director of Camp Joy. “It’s our plan B.”
“Do these provide enough heat for the kids?” I queried, pointing to one of the units plugged into a wall socket.
“Barely when they’re working,” mused Albert. “The electrical system is old, so we’re always tripping the fuses. Blown fuse. No heat.”
Tripping fuses… antiquated furnaces… one of our many challenges in running children’s programs in old church buildings.
Our kids deserve better. Fickle space heaters are not a long term solution to abate winter cold. Summer heat and humidity can be unbearable as well. Action is needed.
Here’s some amazing news. The New Jersey Electrical Company, PSE&G offered UrbanPromise a $180,000 rebate if we replace the boiler, HVAC system and install an electrical heat pump. The upgrade also provides much-needed air condition for the summer months. Better yet, they’ll include an upgrade on all internal and external lighting to be more energy efficient!
The PSE&G offer is a unique, time-sensitive opportunity to make critical changes and a lasting investment in our facilities. Let’s not miss this opportunity.
Here’s the difficult news. The total project will cost UrbanPromise $290,000. So here’s the math:
The clock is ticking. If we can raise enough money in the next 30 days, our team can start the work and secure the rebate.
Here’s the good news: five generous donors have stepped forward and committed $55,000 as a down payment match. They’ll match everything we raise toward this project!
I would love you to consider one of the giving levels listed below to make this great opportunity a reality.
When the work is completed, I know the Camp Joy staff, our children, teens and families will deeply appreciate your generosity. And the impact will continue for years to come!
In advance, thanks for your commitment.

P.S. Thanks to the match offer of $55,000, your gift will have 2x the impact. That’s what I call turning the heat up!
P.P.S. On the hottest days of summer, we’ve had to close the program at this site – it’s just not safe. We looking forward to keeping our doors open every day this summer!
